Corneal cross-linking of keratoconus: epi-on / epi-off

лечение на кератоконус

Issue 8/2025

Specialized Hospital for Active Treatment „Akad. Pashev“ – Sofia

Keratokonus is a non-inflammatory, degenerative eye disease in which the cornea progressively loses its stability. As a result of this process it protrudes (especially in the central part) and thins out. This leads to irregular corneal astigmatism, high myopia, which is why patient’s vision progressively deteriorate. Typically both eyes are affected, although often at the start and during the progression of the process significant asymmetry is observed.
Keratoconus is among the most mysterious disease in humans, especially when it occurs without concomitant systemic pathology and as part of the syndrome disease. Regardless of new data, particularly as result of modern diagnostic, there is still no consensus on keratoconus etiology, early diagnosis and the most appropriate treatment methods. It is known that the disease progresses to a certain age, then progression stops and lately more often we can observe patients with stationed keratoconus (forme frusta).

Key words: Keratoconus diagnosis, corneal topography, corneal cross-linking treatment
