“Red eye” is one of the most common ophthalmological conditions and one of the most common reasons for a visit to the general practitioner and the ophthalmologist. Inflammation of almost any part of the eye, including the lacrimal glands and eyelids, or a defective tear film, can cause red eyes. Often, GPs and pediatricians are the first to encounter this condition, and their knowledge of when to refer patients to an ophthalmologist is critical. Making an accurate diagnosis in children is often significantly more difficult, as the history may be vague and a thorough examination is often very difficult.
