Posterior capsule opacification (PCO), known as secondary cataract, is the most common postoperative complication following cataract extraction with intraocular lens (IOL) implantation. It is caused by the migration, proliferation, and differentiation of residual lens epithelial cells (LECs) on the posterior lens capsule. Risk factors for the development of secondary cataract include young age, myopia, concurrent ocular and systemic diseases, The material and the design of the IOL are also important factors. The primary treatment method is Nd:YAG (neodymium:yttrium-aluminum-garnet)capsulotomy, which achieves rapid and lasting improvement in vision. The aim of this article is to familiarize readers with the condition and to present a clinical case.
Key words: secondary cataract, posterior capsule opacification, PCO, lens epithelial cells, Nd:YAG laser, intraocular lens, postoperative complications
