Pashalieva, I.
Department of Physiology and Pathophysiology, MU – Varna

Many patients use nutrients and dietary supplements that can potentially alter the risk of bleeding and coagulation during surgery and when used concomitantly with anticoagulants. Dietary supplements can cause complications and side effects. Supplements with garlic and hawthorn, cordyceps sinensis, echinacea, aloe vera, ginkgo biloba, melatonin, turmeric, fish oil, ginseng and more are discussed. Physicians should be aware of the potential anticoagulant effects of these supplements, and it is best to discontinue their use two weeks before surgery or invasive intervention. It is recommended that training in nutrients and dietary supplements be included in the undergraduate and postgraduate specialization of physicians and nurses to prevent potential complications in clinical practice.

Key words: dietary supplements; herbal supplements; coagulation, risk of bleeding
