Carcinoma of the larynx Dr. K. Peev UMBAL „Tsarica Joanna – ISUL“ – Sofia Summary Carcinoma of the larynx is the most common neoplasm of ENT origin and accounts for 1/3 of head and neck tumors. The standard patient profile is men over 40, smokers and alcohol abusers. Primary laryngeal carcinomas originate from the glottis in 60% of patients, with supraglottis localization in 35%, and less than 5% with subglottic localization. Due to the involvement of different floors of the larynx during diagnosis, it is difficult to determine the initial localization. With early diagnosis in T1, T2 there is a high chance of complete cure by organ-sparing surgery, local excision or radiotherapy. While in advanced stages of the disease T3, T4, multimodal treatment with radical surgical treatment – laryngectomy, combined with radiation and/or chemotherapy is most often required. Carcinoma of the larynx is the most common malignancy in head and neck tumors. Its uncharacteristic symptoms – change in voice, feeling of a foreign body in the throat and odynophagia lead to diagnosis in an advanced stage, disability of patients and increased mortality. Patients are often diagnosed at T3-T4 in a state with severe dysphagia and/or shortness of breath, due to neglect of complaints or masking of the disease by banal catarrh of the upper respiratory tract. A red light should be for any specialist who sees a patient with complaints of a change in voice, hoarseness for more than 2-3 weeks, feeling of a foreign body in the throat for several weeks, or pain when swallowing that does not respond to conservative treatment.
