Bronchiolitis is the most common disease of the lower respiratory tract in the first year of life, which every general practitioner and pediatrician encounters repeatedly in their practice. Acute viral bronchiolitis is a clinically diagnosed condition that is characterized by a wheezing illness associated with an acute upper respiratory tract infection. The main cause of bronchiolitis in children from 2 months. up to 2 years of age is respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) in 50-80% of cases, followed by human metapneumovirus (hMPV) in 19% and other respiratory viruses. The diagnosis of bronchiolitis is usually clinical and is based on epidemiological data, age of the patient and characteristic symptoms. Proving the causative agent of the disease has more epidemiological than clinical importance. Treatment is pathogenetic and symptomatic, but there are still ambiguities, no consensus on behavior and a therapeutic challenge. Therapeutic success depends on the correct behavior and therefore knowledge of the most up-to-date recommendations for the treatment of bronchiolitis is necessary.
