Down syndrome is the most common chromosomal anomaly, with more than half of the children having congenital heart defects (CHD). The most typical CHD in trisomy 21 is the atrioventricular septal defect. Atrial septal defects, ventricular septal defects, patent arterial duct, and Fallot tetralogy can also be diagnosed. These patients are prone to early development of pulmonary hypertension because of the left-to-right shunting through the defects and the specific characteristics of the pulmonary circulation. This is why close follow-up and a timely surgical intervention are indicated.
Key words: trisomy 21, Down syndrome, congenital heart defects, atrioventricular septal defect, pulmonary hypertension
