Hypertensive disorders affect between 5 and 10% of all pregnancies worldwide. Hypertension remains a major cause of maternal, fetal and neonatal morbidity and mortality. Placental abruption, multiple organ failure, disseminated intravascular coagulation, and stroke are among the main risks for pregnant women with hypertension. In the fetus, there is a high risk of intrauterine growth retardation (25% of preeclampsia cases), premature birth (27% of preeclampsia cases) and intrauterine death (4% of preeclampsia cases). The specificity of antihypertensive treatment in pregnant women requires a careful approach by the general practitioner, attending cardiologist and obstetrician-gynecologist.
