The Place of Renal Denervation in the Treatment of Patients with Resistant Arterial Hypertension

Hypertension is the most common adjustable risk factor for death worldwide. Achieving the therapeutic goal is hampered by a number of factors, including non-adherence to drug therapy and individual physiological resistance to therapy. Renal denervation is a concomitant, device-based method for the treatment of uncontrolled hypertension, for which much scientific evidence has been gathered about its efficacy and safety. Numerous pilot studies have shown that RDN, conducted with the latest generation of catheter-based devices, is effective in reducing or interrupting sympathetic signals to the kidneys and reducing sympathetic activity throughout the body. The addition and application of RDN as an innovative concomitant option in the arsenal of antihypertensive treatment requires a structured local program and process that ensures adequate selection of patients with hypertension and the exact implementation of the endovascular RDN procedure.
