Acute generalized exanthematous pustulosis (AGEP) is a severe, cutaneous skin adverse reaction with rapid onset. A wide variety of drugs has been reported to cause AGEP and amongst them antibiotics are the most frequently associated. Usually within 48 hours of the exposition to the drug, there is an acute onset of fever, leukocytosis and disseminated pustules on skin.
Cutaneous lesions include disseminated non follicular, sterile pustules on an erythematous base, accompanied by severe pruritus. The sites of predilection are the intertriginous areas and trunk. In severe cases mucous involvement and systemic organ involvement may appear.
Treatment involves discontinuation of the suspected drug, supportive care and monitoring for systemic multiorgan involvement and bacterial superinfection.
