Cutaneous reactions are among the most frequent adverse reactions to drugs. Most of them are benign, but a few can be life threatening. Drug Reaction with Eosinophilia and Systemic Symptoms (DRESS) is a severe systemic drug reaction. The medications most often implicated are anticonvulsants, bupropion, sulfonamides, sulfasalazine, allopurinol, minocycline, abacavir and neviparine. The pathogenesis of DRESS syndrome is complex, as infectious agents such as human herpes viruses (EBV, CMV, HHV-6 and HHV-7), as well as other factors affecting the immune system can modulate the disease process.
