Nutrition as part of the therapy of diabetes mellitus and the importance of diet have been discussed for decades, and it is already a recognized factor in the prevention of type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). However, difficult adherence to the diet and mixed messages about what is unhealthy, healthy, or optimal have led to confusion among people with T2DM and their physicians, as well as the general population. What foods to eat for the prevention, treatment and remission of T2DM has proven to be no small task, with recent research advances that have expanded our understanding in this area. The article addresses some of these issues, focusing on the role of diet in weight control and in the prevention and treatment of T2DM in the context of current understandings of nutrient interrelationships, food quantity and quality, challenges and future directions.

Key words: nutrition, obesity, type 2 diabetes, nutrients
