Novakova, S.,
UMHAT “Sv. Georgi” – Plovdiv

Asthma is among the most common chronic diseases, which can potentially be life-threatening and seriously complicate pregnancy. Physiological changes in the respiratory, cardiovascular and immune systems during pregnancy have a significant role in the manifestations of asthma. The diagnosis and treatment of asthma are well known. Despite the proven safety of maintaining and control therapy and advances in disease management, many pregnant women with asthma do not adhere to treatment. Such behavior can compromise the pregnancy itself, the health of the pregnant woman and the fetus. Good knowledge of the problem by both medical professionals and education of pregnant women with asthma ensures a favorable outcome of the pregnancy for the pregnant, the fetus and the newborn.

Key words: asthma, pregnancy, safety, management, outcome
