Fibrobronchoscopy, followed by bronchoalveolar lavage, is a modern medical-diagnostic method, applied more and more often to assess the nature and severity of diseases of the respiratory system in childhood as well. Endoscopic examination makes it possible to determine the anatomical features of the tracheobronchial tree, the condition of the mucous membrane of the respiratory tract, the spread of the inflammatory process and the effect of the treatment. The composition of the cellular elements in the bronchoalveolar lavage fluid /BALT/ reflects the nature of the inflammatory process: Determining the level of immunoglobulins in BALT in children with chronic lung diseases makes it possible to evaluate local immunity, which can be important for the choice of therapeutic tactics.

Key words: Fibrobronchoscopy, BAL, cytology
